The fifth edition of the UNEP Adaptation Gap Report looks at progress in planning for, financing and implementing adaptation – with a focus on nature-based solutions.

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) launched the 5th edition of the Adaptation Gap Report in a high-level online press event. The event took place at 1:00pm EAT/11:00am CET on Thursday, 14 January 2021, and included time for Q&A from attending journalists.
The Paris Agreement requires all its signatories to plan and implement adaptation measures through national adaptation plans, studies, monitoring of climate change effects and investment in a green future. The UNEP Adaptation Gap Report 2020 finds that such action is lagging far behind. It finds that while nations have advanced in planning and implementation, huge gaps remain, particularly in finance for developing countries and bringing adaptation projects to the stage where they bring real reductions in climate risks.
The report emphasizes the role of nature-based solutions – locally-appropriate actions that address societal challenges, such as climate change, and provide human well-being and biodiversity benefits by protecting, sustainably managing and restoring natural or modified ecosystems. Public and private finance for adaptation must be stepped up urgently, along with faster implementation.
