TeRRIFICA in Belarus: collaboration with stakeholders, creation of an eco-transport club and tree planting in Minsk
December 15, 2022On December 2, the Final conference of the TeRRIFICA project took place at the headquarters of the Research Executive Agency (REA) in Brussels, Belgium. At the event, participants discussed the importance of the RRI concept, and the results achieved by the pilot regions. The Project manager of the TeRRIFICA Belarus, RCE Belarus coordinator Kate Sposab shared her personal opinion on the project implementation in Belarus.
Even though that in mid-2021 the Education for Sustainable Development Association was liquidated by order of the state, the TeRRIFICA team implemented all necessary deliverables. For example, schoolchildren from Gymnasium No. 19 in Minsk organised an eco-transport club, which is working to expand the possibilities of using eco-transport in the Frunzensky district in Minsk, which is overcrowded with transport. Representatives of the Palace of Children and Youth “Orion” in Minsk were able to plant trees in the Shabany microdistrict of the Zavodskoy district of Minsk.
An important role in the implementation of the project in Belarus was played by the crowdmapping tool, which turned out to be the only opportunity for people to express their opinion regarding climate challenges in the country. As part of the implementation of project activities in Minsk – a summer school and climate workshops – the further use of the map was discussed, but nevertheless, all participants recognized its important educational value. “This tool is the first step to express a civil position regarding the environmental situation in Belarus,” said Kate.
Kate also noted that the team managed to draw attention to the problem of climate change, change the attitudes between different stakeholders, the attitudes of university teachers and introduce teachers and students to the concept of citizen science.
At the end of the conference, representatives of the European Commission noted the success of the results of the pilot regions. They especially noted the importance of supporting the representatives of Belarus throughout the project, because it shows how much people are interested in defending their environmental rights and changing the environmental situation in the country.
