The Catalan city Cornellà de Llobregat, located at the metropolitan area of Barcelona, has won the European Green Capital Award for 2020. The title of European Green Leaf 2019 goes jointly to the cities of Lisbon and Horst aan de Maas. These prestigious titles were awarded by the EU Commissioner for Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Karmenu Vella, at an awards ceremony in Nijmegen, the Netherlands – the current European Green Capital.

This award, awarded by the European Commission, acknowledged the commitment of Cornellà de Llobregat to become a truly sustainable city within a high density metropolitan area, which could be a model for other compact urban areas. The jury has been particularly impressed by the measures to pacify the traffic and to promote sustainable transport modes. The city also shows a strong concern in water management, including its conservation, flood management and public awareness campaigns.

Cornellà was among the finalists of the European Green Leaf Award 2019, along with Gabrovo (Bulgaria), Horst aan de Maas (Netherlands), Joensuu (Finland) and Mechelen (Belgium). The prize is being promoted by the European Commission to reward the environmental commitment of European cities of between 20,000 and 100,000 inhabitants, as well as their efforts to promote green growth.

The prize recognizes the efforts of the municipal administration and the entities to build a more habitable and sustainable city, largely within the framework of the Cornellà Natura project. Two years ago, Cornellà was also a finalist of this award, which corresponded to Galway (Ireland) on that occasion.

The technical evaluation has taken into account aspects such as efforts in climate change and energy management, sustainable urban mobility, nature and biodiversity, noise and air quality, waste and circular economy, and water management. All of them with the clear objective of improving the city and, above all, the quality of life of its inhabitants.
