CPN Regional TeRRIFICA Summer School in Montenegro

Juli 25, 2022

The Regional TeRRIFICA Summer School in the Belgrade Pilot Region was organized by Center for the Promotion of Science in Ivanova Korita, Montenegro, from June 27 to June 30, 2022. The participants were young people from the Balkan region: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Montenegro, and Serbia. All the activities were adjusted for the young educated participants familiar with the climate change issues and civic engagement.

As an introduction, the mapping results of the TeRRIFICA project and the online crowd-mapping tool were presented to the participants and they were encouraged to contribute. The Regional Summer School activities were divided into lectures and workshops in order to provide a scientific background as well as to empower young participants to study transparent and inclusive climate actions, and reflect upon our regional climate future by applying citizen science and co-creation methods.

As a concluding task, the participants of the Regional Summer School were invited to create their vision of a climate landscape 2030 in the Balkan region. They showed their rich imagination in/by creating four short video-clips which present the imagined regional environmental future.

VIDEO-CLIPS

1. A young man wakes up after traveling through time in the near future, in the year 2030, and realizes how many positive changes the vision of a climate-conscious city has brought. If we invest in education and knowledge, a bright future awaits us – this is the message of this video. The video-clip Our Ecological City in the Year 2030 was created by Zoran Lunganović, Elena Primorac, Mattea Mačkić Jovanović and Aleksandra Kulić Mandić: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9CXrGLpJH4M

2. In the video Mr. Tree Leaf, the main promoter of the campaign is the tree which suggests use of solar energy and establishment of a clean energy system through an exclusive interview, from the view of a tree. The tree advises: „Plant us a little more and it will be possible to cool down the city!“ This video was created by Patricia Knechtl, Vanja Mirjana Vujić, Milica Vušanovic, Slobodan Gnjato and Dejan Stević: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x62yTHq-AXo

3. In the imaginary city Hatemelozopolis, the climate is rapidly and worryingly changing. Residents are aware that there are no green areas in the cities and that the city’s infrastructure is inadequate for the future climate. Scientists know what steps need to be taken and what the obstacles are. „We want a climate-conscious community with adequate infrastructure for the future climate and a sustainable green economy!“, Žarko Petrović, Luka Velašević, Marko Ivanišević, Tamara Klisara and Helena Turk say in this video-clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vEkKauex5mA&t=2s

4. Josip Primorac, Nevena Brdarič, Petra Stavrov, Lucia Brevulj and Kristina Kračković advise that we must stop and look back at our mistakes, trying to rationally use resources, recycle, strengthen organic agriculture… If we want to be responsible and change our habits before it’s too late. „The planet is on our side, we should also try to be on the planet’s side“, they say: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lyFMA4mBLSo&t=7s

The aim of this Regional Summer School was to provide an intensive opinion exchange among young people from the region, as well as to educate and inspire them for action through the presentation of up-to-date TeRRIFICA results and the scientific overview of current climate change issues at the global and local scale. The set of workshops within the Regional Summer School program motivated the participants to develop a vision of a climate resilient city in the Balkan region and with this idea in mind further engage with climate action in their respective local communities.
